Mapping Urban Equity

As part of a small team of designers and historians at NCSU, collaborated on an interactive web-based map. This map combines historical research with data visualization to investigate Raleigh’s unique housing history.

Ayla Gizlice is an award-winning ceramicist and installation artist using ceramics, fibers, installation, performance, and creative writing to explore matters of agency, geology, and the body. With a growing archive of photo documentation and increasingly busy practice, she needed a homepage that could present her work clearly and professionally, with aesthetics and styling which complement, but never distract from, the work.

Ayla’s projects are immersive and often take years to complete.Each one brings together two to four connected pieces and relies on thoughtful writing to explain the research, materials, and processes behind the work. While far from the in-person experience, the sites layout is meant to structure the viewing experience like walking through one of her installations. Upon opening one of her projects, a horizontal gallery maximizes screen real estate for high-resolution images, which is essential for appreciating the many subtle details and material choices unique to Ayla’s work. The horizontal scroll also shifts the usual expectations of browsing, creating a more exploratory, story-like way of moving through the work.

Eager Rhizome

Eager Rhizome is an installation that fuses generative 3D animation, depth sensing cameras, and AR. An array of depth sensing cameras construct a 3D model of gallery visitors as they move through the space. These 3D models are the digital soil that a lush, fantastic garden grows from. The garden becomes cumulative and expansive, absorbing the history of the visitors who move through the space. The state of the garden can be viewed remotely through a website, via live monitors or projections. Eager Rhizome encourages awareness of the spaces and places we travel through, and how we all contribute to the growth and spread of an art installation.
